The box needs an adapter ring attached to hang a standard fixture (or to mount switches, receptacles, etc.) By itself that is just a junction box called a "4-S" (for 4" square). Look for a 4-S to 4-O plaster ring.

Eeek, I think that would be difficult if you do not have roof/attic access to the top of the light boxes as they are usually connected to the rafters via side nails. I may be wrong on that as I have never tried and different builders might use different .I thought about installing a 2"x4" rectangular junction box on the inside of the wall behind where I want to install the exterior junction box, but I wasn't sure what to do with the wire between the 2 junction boxes. I don't think I can fit set-screw connectors/EMT between the 2 junction boxes since they will only be 1-1.5" apart.
