Scott Rothkopf’s refrain is the same this December as it was last December: New York is expensive.

Rothkopf is the director of the Whitney Museum, which announced a year ago that it was dropping its pay-what-you-wish policy on Friday evenings and on the second Sunday of each month. No admission would be charged during those times.

Now Rothkopf is expanding free admission by targeting an age group, not a time slot. On Wednesday the Whitney became free to anyone 25 or under at any time. Those older than 25 are still charged $30, except during the already-free times.

Rothkopf said that the goal of free admission for those 25 and under was to “remove the barriers” that keep people away from the museum.

Affordability is one, he said. “New York is expensive in so many ways — for everyone,” he said. “We know there are people who cannot afford to come to the Whitney. There are some people who maybe could afford to come to the Whitney but might choose not to” because paying for admission could mean having to scrimp on something else.
